Being a woman of minority (Asian), I remember growing up always feeling I had to try a little harder. I felt out of place growing up in Hong Kong because I look Chinese but did not speak it well and do not write it at all. And I felt out of place growing up in Canada going to a very Anglo/Jewish private school. Now I know that when I don’t act from a place of self-discrimination, the opportunities and possibilities are endless. Now I’m not saying prejudice doesn’t exist; I’m just saying that when you make up stories about how you “can’t” because of who you are, you’ve just put yourself in a box. Just look at Obama! What an enspiration of breaking down old beliefs, perseverance and success. Good on ya! The world is finally thinking….

The funniest conversation took place between my 9 year old daughter and I this weekend that I must share. She asked me “Mommy, you know how you say you love our family more than anyone else in the world?”, to which I respond, “yes honey,” really wondering where this conversation was going to go:) She then says that she has decided not to have children because she thinks that when she has her own family, she will love me less and she doesn’t want to do that!! Isn’t it funny how we make assumptions that love has capacity? That there is a limit to it. That we only have so much to give. I understand that we only have so much time to devote but how is it that we love one child, and when the next one is born, we find the capacity to love the next one just as much? What is your experience with love and its capacity? I feel like we can just turn on the tap and source more love when we want to share it…what do you think?

I am enthusiastically reading the book by Daniel Pink called “A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers will Rule the World” and I cannot tell you how tickled I am that creative, artistic disciplines are finally becoming recognized openly, praised publicly and practiced feverishly by successful corporations. Having just listened to Pink being interviewed on Oprah’s soul series show, it is so, so encouraging to know that my left brain side (MBA, logical, organized, linear) can only be blossomed by the capacities from the right side of my brain - being creative, fun, playful, conversational and purposeful, which is the side for me that is EXPRESSIVE and JOYFUL. What side of YOUR brain to you function from? I’d love to know.

I am filled with mixed emotions as I walk out into the world these days - the markets have crashed, the US and Canadian economies are reacting to the political frenzy with its impending elections…the media-created energy is fearful, anticipatory, untrustworthy and protective.
And as much as I feel this, I am reminded of the fact that Fall is my favourite time of the year. It is a time of new beginnings as the leaves on the trees change colour and we prepare for the winter. It is usually a time for activity and getting out there before the holiday season rolls in.
It feels different this year. There is an uneasy quietness that fills the air and I have been consciously aware of its initial eerieness. I’m curious what you are experiencing right now? I know that I am using this time as a time for working ON my life and business rather than busily working IN it. What’s going on out there?
